May 22, 2007, contractions woke me up around 1 a.m. I tried to sleep some more, but they were waking me up every 10 minutes. Jeff and I went for a short walk outside, and then I took a shower. The contractions were coming about every 8 minutes by that time. We left for the hospital about 5 a.m. They checked me at the hospital and I was only dialated to 2 cm, so they told me to walk around the hospital. Jeff and I walked for about 30 minutes and I had to stop and take deep breaths with every contraction. When we returned to our room, they checked me again and I was 5 cm. Yay! We were going to have a baby today!! The doctor on call came in about 30 minutes later and broke my water. He checked me immediately after breaking my water and I was 8 cm! And still no epidural!! My nurse called for an anethesiologist to come NOW. At the rate I was dialating if any more time had passed I would miss my window for an epidural. EEEEK. It took the epidural man 3 tries to get a successful line but he finally got it. Finally some relief!! The nurse told Jeff and I she would give us an hour to get some rest. An hour later she checks me again and I'm at 10 cm. Time to push!! The doctor comes in and I do 2 practice pushes. Each time I push Gideon's heart rate drops dramatically. My doctor talks to Jeff and I and says he's guessing it's a cord issue causing the heart rate decelerations and recommends a c-section. If we agreed at that point, it was not an emergency situation so Jeff and I agree. Jeff gets into his gown, blue hat and shoe covers. I get wheeled into the OR and hooked up to some monitors. Jeff comes in and sits beside me. I can't feel pain, but I can feel the "tugging and pulling." Odd sensation to say the least. My doctor tells me I'll feel some pressure and as he's saying that he pushes down on my pregnant belly, taking my breath away, and the next thing I know a crying Giddy, covered in goop, is held over the curtain for us to see!! Turns out my doctor was right, the cord was wrapped around him twice and if we had opted to wait and continue to push and try for a vaginal delivery Giddy would have had major complications. Jeff goes with him to the nursery and I'm left to get stitched up and recover. After reuniting in the hospital room Jeff tells me, "I saw your guts."

Awesome Christie! I absolutely love that you went with an internal type of reflection.
ReplyDeleteAwwwwww!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat way to interpret the theme Christie!
ReplyDeleteI never even thought of that meaning of reflections. I love seeing all of our different perspectives. Oh and the Gidster was (and still is) a cutie pie.
